11TH ANNUAL PICNIC IN ASTORIA PARK 2022

We had an amazing day! Thank you to everyone who came out to play! Much gratitude to Team BB Picnic 2022. We were small but mighty and we kept the smiles going all day. Thank you to all of the people who invested in joy for the Blissful Community.

Oh yeah, it’s that time of year again, and we can’t wait to be together, out in the fresh year and under the trees, with our Blissful Family. Come enjoy life with us at Blissful Bedrooms 11th Annual Potluck Picnic in Astoria Park.

WHERE: Astoria Park (which sits on the edge of the East River and rests between the Robert F. Kennedy Bridge (Triboro) and Hells Gate Bridge. It’s a big park. Save yourself a lot of searching and walking by entering the park entrance on Ditmars Blvd (between 19th Street and Shore Blvd). Walk on the path towards the water and look for Blissful Bedrooms signs and a happy bunch of people on the grass to the left.

Address for Access-A-Ride/Uber/GPS:
Parkside Deli (located directly across the street from the park entrance), 1859 Ditmars Blvd (between 19th Street and Shore Blvd) Astoria, New York.

Please note, this is the address to use for Access-a-Ride because it will leave you at the entrance closest to our location. Don’t simply make the reservation for Astoria Park – it’s a big park and you will have to walk a long way otherwise.

Public Transportation:
N or W train to Ditmars Blvd. You can walk 12 blocks to the park (about 10 minutes) or transfer to the Q69 on Ditmars Blvd and 31st street and get off at 21st/Ditmars (3 stops) and walk two blocks to the park entrance.

POTLUCK: What’s a potluck, you may ask? A potluck is a gathering where each guest contributes a dish of food that is to be shared.

Please bring a generous helping of your favorite homemade dish, delicious store bought food, fruit, snacks, drinks, desserts, etc. to share! Please let Martha know what you are planning to bring when you RSVP to avoid any duplicates and so we can have a well rounded buffet for our guests.

Also, please bring beach chairs/blankets to sit on, towels to dry off, and any fun games/activities to add to the festivities.

We have plenty of fun activities planned for everyone, including an arts & crafts area similar to our Art in the Park event last September where you can paint on a canvas, decorate a sun visor (we will provide) or bring a pair of Crocs to decorate (we will have a nice selection of fun decorations available).

Do you have some fun talents, resources, or ideas to make our picnic even better? Please reach out! We are always excited for children’s entertainers, face painters, musicians, etc. to be our partners in compassion.

Note, there is a public pool in Astoria Park, bring a bathing suit and towel if you are interested in taking a swim some time during the day. There is also a public bathroom and children’s playground close by.

VOLUNTEERS/CONTRIBUTORS ARE VERY MUCH NEEDED TO HELP CARRY OUT OUR MISSION TO GET DISABLED YOUTH OUT OF THEIR BEDROOMS AND INTO ASTORIA PARK FOR A JOYOUS DAY WITH FRIENDS. Everything from helping with set-up and breakdown, pushing our guests in wheelchairs to the destination from the walkway, assistance with carrying out recreational events, etc. You are guaranteed to have a rewarding and joyful day!

WE CAN’T WAIT TO SEE YOU ALL THERE!!

Summer is an intense and important time for Blissful Bedrooms programming. We take advantage of the warm weather to pack in as many meaningful gatherings as possible so disabled youth can get out of their bedrooms and experience joy with others. This year is even more impactful than ever because many of the folks from the Blissful Community have been cooped at home for the past couple of years and are finally venturing out.

It is also one of the most difficult in terms of fundraising in order to carry it all out. As you probably know, every person on the Blissful Bedrooms team volunteers their time and energy. It speaks to the passion, endurance, and commitment that the Blissful Bedrooms leaders have for the mission of this organization, which is now going into its 12th year of existence! However, we do rely heavily on grassroots fundraising to sustain our charity, and we are truly grateful and honored by each and every donation that is invested so that we can continue to do this heartwarming and socially impactful work.
